What is Reiki?

Reiki SymbolReiki is an ancient art of laying on of hands. This art of healing originated in Japan. It is a very gentle form of healing & enlightenment. It can be used on yourself and on others.

Either “hands on” or distant healing can be performed. Distant healing is suitable for those that are unable to attend a healing session in person for some reason or those that are living abroad.

When experiencing pain, the first thing most people do is to put their hands on it. When a child falls and scrapes their knee, the Mother wants to touch or kiss it to make it better. The instinct is to place her hands on the sore or pained area. Human touch conveys warmth, serenity, love, caring and healing. When an animal is in pain, for the same reasons – a dog or cat’s first instinct is to lick the pained area. This simple act is the basis for all touch healing techniques.

The living being, human, animal or plant, radiates warmth and energy. This energy is the life force itself! In Japan the energy is termed Ki and it is from this word that Reiki is named.

Reiki is pronounced “Ray-Key”. When Rei and Ki are broken down into two component parts: “Rei” means “Universal”, transcendental spirit, mysterious power, essence. “Ki”, is described as the spirit, the vital life force’s energy. Very similar to Ch’i of the Chinese, Ki is also the essential life force of the Earth, the planets, the stars, the heavens and these sources of energy affect the living body’s Ki. Everything alive contains Ki and radiates it – it is the biomagnetic energy of the aura.

The most common definition of Reiki is therefore ‘Universal Life Energy’. And that’s exactly what it is. It is Universal Healing Energy. It is life force energy that animates all life. This universal life energy is in all things, everywhere. The Kanji (rei & ki) represent the Universal Spirit coming together with our own ‘enlightenment’.
